National Science and Engineering Week... Science for everyone!
15 – 19 March 2010 was Science & Engineering Week at Danesfield. As a Specialist Science School we wanted to encourage interest in Science Technology Engineering and Maths.
During the five days of fun pupils took part in various hands-on activities supported by the staff and governors. These included rocket making and launch pad, a field trip to the River Holford, paper making, designing and testing powered model cars and investigating the world land speed record, Maths activities, planting in our polytunnel, PE activities and a visit from the EDF electric powered car.
Year 5 and 6 pupils enjoyed a tea-testing experiment as part of the National CREST investigation, while Year 5s also enjoyed a visit from Peter Dawson from The Big Bug Bag who introduced pupils to the world of invertebrates. Pupils also recorded the effects of using different ingredients in the cake-making process to understand the role of different flour and fats when cooking.
Finally the children enjoyed a ‘what is it?’ competition thanks to Whiteland Engineering Ltd, a machining specialist supporting the aerospace and defence industries. The company lent the school various pieces of equipment and children had to try and work out what there were and how they worked.
We planned this event to celebrate Science, and it is hoped that it will become an annual event.
