GLOSSARY
Education is full of jargon and abbreviations – as are many other aspects of life today. Hopefully you will find the following list helpful, it is by no means complete.
DFCSF - Department for Children, Schools and Families
ECM Every Child Matters - The Government’s vision for children’s services, published in September 2003. The five outcomes for children are -
• Being healthy
• Staying safe
• Enjoying and achieving
• Making a positive contribution
• Social and economic well-being
EDS Education Development Service - Part of Somerset’s Education Service.
HLTA Higher Learning Teaching Assistant
INSET In-service Training for Teachers - Professional development for teachers in a wide range of educational areas.
KS Key Stage - The National Curriculum is delivered as part of a continuous process from the age of 5 (Year 1) to 16 (Year 11) in four Key Stages. These are: Key Stage 1 (Infants); Key Stage 2 (Juniors); Key Stage 3 (Lower Secondary); Key Stage 4 (Upper Secondary).
LA Local Authority - responsible for administering Education at the local level.

Government funding given to LAs to devolve to schools for spending in
specific areas. Some of the funding may be held centrally by the LA.
VC Voluntary Controlled - Church of England school wholly maintained by the LA but owned by the Trustees.
School Transport
Under the present law, children are entitled to free school transport if any one of the following conditions apply:
The child must live at a distance of 2 miles or more from the school and be under the age of 8
years.
The child must live at least a distance of 3 miles or more from the school if she/he is over 8
years.
The distances are calculated by the shortest direct walking route from door to door.
Free transport will continue to be granted for pupils living between 2 and 3 miles from this school until the end of the term in which they have their 8th birthday.
If your child is eligible for school transport, the school will give you a form to complete which is then sent to County Hall. The school has no further dealings with transport matters and any queries should be directed to:
