 Every Child Matters

The ultimate aim of this programme is to produce healthy, physically active pupils who enjoy exercise and possess the appropriate skills, knowledge, understanding and motivation to maintain physical activity throughout their adult lives. At the same time the outcomes of the Every Child Matters framework is the bases for all lessons. The five strands being:

Being healthy

Staying safe

Enjoying and achieving

Making a positive contribution

Achieving economic well being

Being healthy is promoted in lessons, not only physically, but healthy lifestyles, diet and the opportunity for involvement in sport, both in and out of school are encouraged.

Staying safe. Policies have been written with the view of making sure that pupils can enjoy their lessons, as well as extra curricular activities, in an environment that is safe for them and others. Pupils need to feel secure in whatever activity they are involved in. They are also encouraged to take on some of the responsibility of, and show understanding of the safety aspects relevant to their experiences.

Enjoying and achieving. The programme encourages pupil to be involved in achieving success through teacher led activities, independent learning and through the use of ICT. Pupils are informed of their levels of achievement and targets given for improvement. Enjoyment usually leads to success and pupils are encouraged to participate in extra curricular activities regardless of ability.

Making a positive contribution. Pupils are involved in making decisions within their PE lessons. They are given situations where they have to develop positive relationships with others, whether in a gymnastics lesson or as part of a team in OAA or games. The importance of team work and working towards an end result is positively encouraged. The importance of listening to others and sharing ideas, with every pupil having something positive to contribute is encouraged.

Achieving economic well being. Through involvement in physical education it is hoped that pupils will have the confidence and knowledge of how and where they can continue to involve themselves in activity. The physical and social benefits of staying fit and healthy are premoted.
